James Specht is a Charles E Bessey Professor in the UNL Agronomy and Horticulture Department specializing in Soybean Genetics & Physiology. He has conducted research on the genetics and physiology of soybean response to general (and timed) water-abundance and water-scarcity for nearly 30 years. The practical implications of his basic research for the irrigated soybean producer will be presented. He received his B.Sc. in Agronomy from the University of Nebraska, his M.S. in Agronomy from the University of Illinois, and his Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Nebraska.

Loren Giesler
Dr. Giesler's area of expertise includes diagnosis and management of soybean diseases. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Giesler has developed a research program focused on evaluating soybean germplasm for disease resistance and conducting disease management studies. He previously was the Coordinator of the University of Nebraska Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic.
He earned a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Chadron State College, and MS and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of Nebraska.

Mark Bernards
Dr. Bernards' joined the weed science faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2005.   His research focuses on weed control in irrigated cropping systems.  He holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agronomy from Brigham Young University, and Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Sciences from Michigan State University.

Tom Hunt 
Dr. Hunt is an Associate Professor and Extension Entomology Specialist at the University of Nebraska NEREC Haskell Agricultural Laboratory, Concord, NE.  He received his B.S. degree in Agriculture in 1990, a M.S. degree in Entomology in 1993, and a Ph.D. degree in Entomology in 1999 from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE.  He joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska in 1999.  Dr. Hunt's research focuses on the management and ecology of insect pests of crops in Nebraska. His research projects fall in the general categories of economic threshold development, resistance management, insect pest biology & behavior, emerging problems, and product efficacy.

Lowell Sandell 
Lowell started as the new Extension Weed Science Educator for the University of Nebraska in March.  He is located on the east campus at UN-Lincoln.  His primary duties will be to participate in, and plan extension weed science education activities in conjunction with other faculty and staff in our department and throughout the extension service.  These activities will range from coordinating the Crop Protection Clinics to identifying plant samples submitted to the diagnostic clinic.  He did his training at Iowa State University, with a B.S. in agronomy and a M.S. in weed science.  His background is primarily in corn and soybean production.

Ron Seymour 
Dr. Ron Seymour is an Extension Educator located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension office in Adams County. He received his B.S. degree in Entomology in 1981 from Colorado State University, a M.S. degree in Entomology in 1986, and a Ph.D. degree in Entomology in 1996 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Seymour has worked for the University of Nebraska since 1986 and at the Adams County office since 2000. His program focuses on increasing profitability in field crops and on insect management for agricultural and urban clientele.

Charlie is an extension and research specialist in nutrient management for more efficient crop production and water quality protection. Areas of interest include: soil fertility management for corn, sorghum and soybean; improvement of no-till systems through starter fertilizer use and one-time tillage of no-till; sweet sorghum as a bio-fuel crop; and nutrient management for water quality protection. He also has collaborative research in several countries in Africa.

Ray Ward earned his doctorate degree in soil fertility from South Dakota State University after his undergraduate work at the University of Nebraska. A certified soil scientist, Dr. Ward founded Ward Laboratories, Inc. in Kearney, Nebraska in 1983 and developed it into one of the largest and most respected laboratory testing facilities in the Great Plains. Throughout his 45 career he also managed laboratories in Oklahoma, Kansas and South Dakota. Dr. Ward is well respected in his profession as is evidenced by his authorship of numerous published papers and articles, his speaking engagements at state, regional and national meetings and the expertise he has been asked to provide throughout the United States and in several foreign countries as well.

Steve Johnson
Steve' s areas of expertise include government farm programs, commodity marketing, crop insurance and other farm risk management strategies. His experience includes work in both public and private sectors. Dr. Johnson has been with Iowa State University since 1999. He holds a B.Sc.and M.S.degrees in Ag Education/Ag Economics from Iowa State University and Ph.D. from Colorado State University.  He stresses the emerging role of the Bioeconomy and the changing landscape of row crop agriculture.

Terry Hejny is the recipient of the 2007 Holling Family Senior Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. His programming responsibilities include marketing/risk management and cropping systems education. Terry has been with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1998.  He received a B.S. degree in Ag Education from UNL and a M.Ed. degree from Doane College and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. from UNL. Terry stresses that producers make decisions that will allow their farm business to be as profitable and competitive as possible.
